If anyone outside LeBron James’ camp knew what was about to happen, it was Dwyane Wade. James was in Las Vegas the week leading up to his announcement that he was leaving the Heat for Cleveland, and Wade spent a large portion of that week with him.

The night before James revealed his decision, he and Wade shared a private plane from Las Vegas back to Miami. James did not share his plans with Wade, but it was clear.

“We had a long flight back from Vegas,” Wade said this morning at his fantasy basketball camp in Hollywood. “I probably knew then, without him telling me at that moment. You could tell where someone’s heart is and what they’re thinking. I kind of knew at that moment.

“As his friend, I’m just supportive. As crazy as that might sound, I’m supportive of my friend doing what makes them happy. Obviously same thing with him in this situation. You’ve gotta do what makes you happy — selfishly do what makes you happy. The decision to go back home was that.

“I went to sleep knowing. He called me the next day. But I knew then. Obviously he still had to say the final yay or nay, but I knew. I could tell.”

Wade said he remains friends with James and looks forward to seeing him again. He commended him for making the decision that best served his interests.

He also made clear that he did not spend the week in Las Vegas trying to convince James to stay with the Heat.

“No, I don’t recruit,” he said. “I ain’t gonna recruit him. I ain’t gotta recruit him.”
